Bazi Reading: Why the Same Stem Gets Different Ten God Labels

A Bazi reading reads relationships within the four pillars, starting with the Day stem, your Day Master. Compare each other visible stem and each hidden stem with that reference by element and yin–yang polarity. A Ten God is a relative label, not a permanent property of a character; the same Jia stem can receive different labels when the Day Master changes.

Start with the reference, then name the target

Find the top character of the Day pillar before reading the other labels. This calculator marks that card Day Master; the Year, Month and Hour card labels refer to their visible stems. Expand Hidden stems & Ten Gods for the stems inside each branch. Source: core and the result renderer.

The chart has eight visible positions, but the other seven positions are not seven interchangeable stem lookups. There are three other visible stems and four branches; a branch contains one or more hidden stems, each of which is labeled separately here. A branch-level summary in another display may refer to a selected hidden stem, so identify that target before comparing labels. Source: core, hidden mapping and god(dm,s).

What changes a Ten God label?

For the lookup used on this site, the inputs are the Day stem and the exact target stem. The element relationship selects a family; same or opposite yin–yang polarity selects its member. The function god(dm,s) looks up LunarUtil.SHI_SHEN[dm+s], then translates the result into English. Pillar position is not an argument to that function. Read the arrows from the Day Master, rather than treating every mention of Wood or Water as the same relationship. Wood generates Fire, while Water controls Fire in this lookup. With Bing Yang Fire or Ding Yin Fire as reference, that leaves the family unchanged for a fixed target but reverses the polarity match. These are traditional classification rules, not measured psychological effects. Source: SHI_SHEN and WU_XING_GAN.

Two charts, the same Jia and Gui

These are synthetic teaching inputs, not anyone’s birth record: Gregorian September 14 and 15, 2004, 10:10, Male, Tokyo preset, Asia/Tokyo, longitude 139.69171° east, solar time OFF, Midnight day boundary and First occurrence for a repeated hour. The existing engine resolved each time with a +540-minute offset, to 01:10 UTC on its respective date. Both runs were entered in the live calculator and checked against the local engine on November 1, 2026. Source: complete inputs and outputs.

In the two tested Year cards, the target remains Jia Yang Wood, but its label changes from Indirect Resource in A to Direct Resource in B; neither the target stem nor its Wood element changed. Test ledger.

In the two tested Month cards, the target remains Gui Yin Water, but its label changes from Direct Officer in A to Seven Killings in B; the reference remains Fire while its polarity changes. Test ledger.

The same Year stem Jia Yang Wood is Indirect Resource relative to Bing Yang Fire in case A, but Direct Resource relative to Ding Yin Fire in case B. The target is fixed; the reference polarity changes.
Keep the target fixed before comparing its label.

Which comparison would be misleading?

The tested Hour cards are Gui Si in A and Yi Si in B, so comparing their Direct Officer and Indirect Resource labels does not isolate a fixed target: both the Day Master and the visible Hour stem changed. Test ledger.

Within A, the visible Gui in the Month and Hour cards has the same Direct Officer label in both positions, showing that moving a fixed stem between these positions does not change this lookup. Test ledger.

If two tools show different labels for the same Day stem and the same exact target, changing the column name alone cannot explain it under this mapping. First check that one label does not refer to a hidden stem while the other refers to a visible stem. If the inputs really match, inspect each tool’s label dictionary and declared rules instead of assuming either output must describe your life more accurately. “What does it mean if it is present in the Stem or Branch?”

That is a real question posted by m***s, signed Marcos, on Your Chinese Astrology’s Ten Gods Explanation discussion. The immediate reading task is to locate the exact stem being labeled, including a hidden stem inside a branch; the question itself does not establish a prediction about its position.

Under the unchanged Year branch Shen, the tested hidden Geng is Indirect Wealth in A and Direct Wealth in B, while hidden Ren changes from Seven Killings to Direct Officer and hidden Wu from Eating God to Hurting Officer. Test ledger.

Under the unchanged Month branch You, the tested hidden Xin changes from Direct Wealth in A to Indirect Wealth in B, even though the branch and its hidden-stem identity are unchanged. Test ledger.

Do not read Shen as if it were simply the visible stem Geng. In these outputs Shen contains Geng, Ren and Wu, with a separate relationship for each; the Month branch You contains Xin. The branch, the hidden stem and its Ten God are different fields. The ledger preserves those nesting levels so you can check what a label actually refers to. Source: pillars[].hidden.

How to read this layer of your own chart

  1. Confirm the chart inputs first using the birth-input verification guide; a correct label for the wrong Day stem still belongs to the wrong chart.
  2. Write the Day stem as the reference and the exact other stem as the target, including its visible or hidden location.
  3. Use the element family and polarity table above, then compare the result with the label shown by the calculator.
  4. Keep the natal chart separate from annual or luck-pillar targets; specify which layer supplied the stem before interpreting it.

The repeatable part is the relationship classification, not an event forecast. A label such as Seven Killings or Direct Wealth does not establish danger or income. This comparison does not weigh seasonal strength, interactions, transformations or special structures, and it does not tell you which element to add or what decision to make. Those questions are outside a two-stem label check.

Can I do a Bazi reading without the hour?

You can inspect the supplied stems and their relationships, but you cannot treat missing Hour targets as known. Use the calculator’s unknown-time checkbox rather than a guessed time. Its partial chart has additional day-boundary and solar-term uncertainty, explained in the unknown-hour guide; the two complete-hour teaching cases here do not test those uncertain boundaries.

Does a different label mean a different personality?

The examples establish a changed lookup result, not a changed personality or a verified future outcome. Keep symbolic reading separate from evidence about a person. Use real circumstances and qualified advice for consequential choices; do not use this table to diagnose illness, assign financial outcomes or predict specific events.

Sources, conventions and what was tested

The machine-readable ledger records both new synthetic cases, full four-pillar outputs, hidden-stem labels, the app checksum and runtime versions. The local code and live form agreed on the displayed results. This is a reproducibility check of this implementation, not an independent certification that every Bazi school uses the same calendar or interpretation conventions.

Calendar and hidden-stem data come from bundled lunar-javascript 1.7.7; English labels and reference selection are visible in BaziEngine core and god(dm,s). The specific September 2004 pair and its fixed-target comparisons are new to this guide; general Ten God rules are established material, not a new discovery. This page teaches reading relationships, while calculator and analysis traces the separate generated notes and model.
