i ching 44

Coming to Meet

i ching 44 is a six-line figure with Heaven above Wind: a broken bottom line beneath five solid lines. Its encounter theme asks what is gaining entry and influence, rather than proving that a particular person is dangerous or that a relationship will fail.

Deriving the six assignments

For each pair, search the sixty-pair cycle for simultaneous agreement with its stem slot and branch slot: the stem advances through ten entries while the branch advances through twelve.

B1 takes Chou from the opening slot of Xun’s inner sequence and Xin from its inner stem assignment. Counting the stem loop to its eighth slot and the branch loop to its second slot meets at cycle position 38. Chou supplies Earth: the generating direction runs from Earth to palace Metal, hence Parents. First-generation Self belongs here.

B2 advances to Hai in that same lower sequence without replacing Xin. The eighth stem slot coincides with branch slot twelve at position 48. Hai contributes Water, which receives generation from the Metal reference, producing Offspring; neither positional role is assigned to this second line.

B3 finishes the inner Xun sequence with You. Pairing stem slot eight with branch slot ten gives position 58. You and the palace share Metal, so this is Brothers rather than a resource or an output category; its role cell remains None.

B4 switches to the outer Qian assignment: Ren with Wu, not the inner Qian stem. Stem slot nine and branch slot seven meet at position 19. Wu’s Fire controls the Metal reference, yielding Officer/Ghost. Response sits here because the first-generation Self at the bottom is paired three places away.

B5 uses the next outer Qian branch, Shen, while keeping Ren. Stem slot nine and branch slot nine coincide immediately at position 9. Shen’s Metal matches the palace element, placing another Brothers candidate at this line without relocating Self.

B6 completes the outer sequence with Xu under Ren. The ninth stem slot and eleventh branch slot align at position 59. Xu’s Earth generates Metal, adding a second Parents candidate; the top position itself confers neither Self nor Response.

C1 and C6 leave Parents at lines 1 and 6 unresolved: their shared category is not a tie-break. This worksheet has no casting date with which to calculate their day and month conditions.

C2 and C7 retain Brothers at lines 3 and 5. Without the recorded moving positions, a selector cannot distinguish a moving candidate from a stationary one; D6 is an independent fixture, not movement evidence for this question filter.

C3 and C8 identify line 4 as the visible Officer/Ghost match. Its Response role does not supply a casting day, so the branch’s void status cannot be established from the role or the hexagram number.

C4 finds Offspring only at line 2. A solitary match narrows the visible list, but cannot turn the absent calendar information into a strength judgment.

C5 has no visible Wealth match because none of the six assigned branches is Wood. No hidden-line record is included here; the visible absence therefore cannot decide whether a fuller chart would supply a hidden candidate.

Why the missing records cannot substitute for one another

Assessing B1 means assessing Chou, whereas assessing B6 means assessing Xu; treating both as one Earth entry would discard the branch distinction before any calendar check. Likewise, a moving-line record must identify the position in this particular cast, not merely supply the name of a resulting hexagram.

The numbers 38 and 59 cannot repair the missing date: both are cycle positions attached to line assignments, so they cannot identify when the question was asked. There is no basis here for treating the larger index on B6 as later timing or greater strength than B1.

D6 cannot supply a shortcut either: its sole moving position is B5, categorized as Brothers, while B1 and B6 are Parents. Borrowing that fixture would import a separate casting record without even identifying a moving Parents candidate. B1’s Self marker also supplies no evidence that B6 moved, remained stationary, or had a particular calendar condition.

The following fixtures use six or eight for an initially broken line and seven or nine for an initially solid line. Only six and nine change. These are designed arithmetic checks, with no personal history or forecast attached.

Eight steps through fixture D6

  1. Set aside D6 as a deliberately constructed record: 8, 7, 7, 7, 9, 7, beginning at the lowest position. It is not a reader’s reported consultation.
  2. Translate the six starting values into 011111: the initial eight is broken, and both seven and nine begin solid.
  3. Divide that pattern into lower 011 and upper 111, identifying Xun below Qian and the original figure in A1.
  4. Compare with the pure Qian pattern 111111: only its lowest position was reversed to obtain 011111. This is Qian’s first palace change, not the fifth-stage arrangement of a different figure.
  5. Place Self at position 1 for that first change, then put Response at position 4; the markers must agree with B1 and B4 before proceeding.
  6. Populate the lower trio with Xin Chou, Xin Hai and Xin You; populate the upper trio with Ren Wu, Ren Shen and Ren Xu, following B1–B6.
  7. Read the resulting category order as Parents, Offspring, Brothers, Officer/Ghost, Brothers, Parents. For a peers filter, C2 consequently retains positions 3 and 5 rather than choosing the marked Self line.
  8. Apply the recorded nine at position 5: that solid line becomes broken, leaving 011101 and figure 50. Check the unchanged original against D6 and the single-position result against A9.

The original palace markers above have not been recomputed as markers for that second drawing. No day, month, hidden line or final useful-line priority has been supplied.
